GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin claimed its spot in the MIAA Championship game Saturday night with a 25–19, 25–21, 25–18 win over Albion on Friday night.
The Knights advance to the MIAA Tournament Championship final Saturday night against Hope. Saturday's final at Van Noord Arena is set to begin at 7 p.m. Hope defeated Trine in a three-set match in the opening semifinal Friday night.
Calvin (23-2 overall) started the first set on an 8-1 run to get to Albion (16-11 overall) early. The Britons were able to stop Calvin's early run and making a small run of their own. The Knights ultimately claimed the first set by taking it 25–19.
The second set started out with the Knights rolling out to an 8–3 lead, but Albion came right back to tie the set at 14–14.
It became a back-and-forth battle between the Knights and Britons the rest of the set. Calvin took the set late by a score of 25-21.
In the third, it was another close set as it started out 10–9 with Calvin having the advantage. The Knights pulled away towards the middle of the set to take a lead 20–16. They ended up winning the final set against Albion 25–18, taking the match.
Senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, MI/Northpointe Christian HS) had a great evening with 15 kills, 16 assists and 5 digs.
COACHES COMMENT: "I thought we came out with the right mentality and played well. I liked our intensity and how well we played together," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners.
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Hope in the MIAA Tournament Final Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
