GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin opened its 2019-20 dual match season with a 6-3 loss to NAIA member IU-Kokomo Friday afternoon inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Thunderstorms throughout West Michigan forced play to be moved indoors.
IU-Kokomo (7-4) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Calvin's No. 1 doubles tandem of sophomore Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) winning 8-2.
In singles play, sophomore Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at No. 3 singles while Bonner was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles.
The visiting Panthers took the remaining singles point including three-set super tiebreaker wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to claim the victory.
COACHES COMMENT: "I am pleased with our effort, we just came up a little short," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We are working some new players into the lineup and some of our returning players are also in new positions. We are in a bit of a transition process but I like the direction we are headed. Also give credit to IU-Kokomo. They have some talented players, came in and adjusted to the indoor surface and came away with the win. Now we turn our attention to offseason improvement before we move back into the heart of our season."
NEXT UP: Calvin will now break until February 27 when it hosts Cornerstone at 6 p.m. inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
