Calvin Women's Soccer Forges Rivalry Tie With Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second consecutive year, Calvin and Hope played to a double-overtime tie in women's soccer. A year ago the two rivals played to a 1-1 draw in Holland. On Saturday, the Knights and Flying Dutch played to a 0-0 tie at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

Calvin (2-8-2 overall, 0-2-1 MIAA) outshot Hope 17-10 but Flying Dutch goalkeeper Jordan Ellingboe was able to come up with nine saves.

Calvin's most dangerous scoring opportunity came off a corner kick in the 59th minute as junior Maria VanderLei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) sent a corner in the box that freshman Kayla Beebe (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) headed towards the far post. Ellingboe and a Hope defender were able to clear the ball off the goal-line however, keeping the game scoreless.

Freshman Emma Thompson (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) had a strong scoring chance in the 71st minute that was saved by Ellingboe.

In the second overtime, both teams had dangerous scoring chances off of corner kicks with shots sailing wide of the frame.

Calvin junior goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) had four saves in posting her third shutout of the year.

COACHES COMMENT: "Today's match was a lot of fun," said Calvin women's soccer head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I'm very pleased with our big effort, and can see us growing as a group. We saw some glimpses of our potential and look forward to getting back to work and continuing to build upon this performance."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Saint Mary's next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. conference match.
