GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin closed out its non-conference schedule with a 4-0 loss to No. 15 Chicago Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
The visiting Maroons flexed their muscles early, scoring in the 8th minute on a rebound shot in the box. Chicago added another goal in the 16th minute to take a 2-0 halftime lead.
Calvin (2-6-1) pressed for a goal in the opening minutes of the second half but Chicago (6-1-1) took the air out of the Calvin comeback bid with a goal in the 55th minute on a well-placed pass through the right wing. Chicago tacked on one more goal, scoring in the 59th minute to seal the win.
Chicago finished with a 24-1 shots at goal advantage. Calvin goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was busy and posted six saves in 77 minutes of action. Sophomore Sarah Hoekwater (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) went the final 12:31 and posted a pair of saves - the first two of her collegiate career.
Calvin's defenders also cleared a pair of Chicago shots off the line to account for a pair of team saves during the match.
The Knights now break until October 5 when they travel to Kalamazoo for a 5 p.m. conference match.
