Calvin Women's Lacrosse Lashes Lawrence Tech 13-10 in Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team opened its 2019 season with a 13-10 victory over Lawrence Tech University Saturday night in a game played at Detroit Country Day High School Fieldhouse.

The game marked a reversal from the 2018 season when Lawrence Tech handed Calvin a 14-8 defeat in Grand Rapids. Lawrence Tech entered the game ranked No. 4 in the NAIA preseason women's lacrosse poll.

In Saturday's contest, Calvin led 7-6 at halftime and never trailed in the second half. The host Blue Devils (0-2) tied the game 7-7 and later 8-8 in the second half but senior Genevieve Schneeman fired in a shot off a feed from junior Emma Verret (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) with 17:40 remaining to put the Knights up 9-8. Schneeman continued on to score two more goals inside the final 10 minutes including an unassisted tally with 1:05 remaining to help seal the win.

Schneeman (Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS) finished the game with three goals and an assist to go with one ground ball. Verrett had a big game with three goals, two assists and four ground balls. She also won five draw controls.

Freshman Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) made her collegiate debut by scoring two goals, collecting three ground balls and winning three draw controls. Senior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a goal and two assists. Senior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had three goals for the Knights. Sophomore Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had a goal, an assist, a draw control and caused two turnovers on defense. Junior Jaimie Van De Burg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an assist, two ground balls and won four draw controls.

Junior goalie Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) had six saves to aid the Calvin defense.

Calvin travels to the University of Chicago on Saturday for a game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (CST).
