Women’s Lacrosse Rally Falls Short at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Calvin women's lacrosse team opened the 2018 season with a hard-fought loss at Kenyon on Saturday afternoon. After trailing by six goals, the Knights cut the deficit to 16-17, but Kenyon came out on to 19-16. Kenyon improves to 2-2 with the win.

The Ladies of Kenyon put the first three goals on the scoreboard on Saturday.

Junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) put the Knights on the score sheet with a goal. Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) tallied the assist.

Trailing 5-1, Sophomore Jaime Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) found the back of the Kenyon net. Van De Burg struck again a minute later.

Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) made it a one-goal game with 17 minutes left in the first half.

After two Kenyon goals, senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) responded with two goals of her own.

The Purple and White went on a 6-0 run over the stretch of six minutes.

Emma Verrett snapped the skid with a shot past the goalie with 6:21 left in the half.

Down a player, Kelly Pepper scored a short-handed goal.

The Knights went into halftime trailing, 13-8.

Emma Verrett struck again with 22:48 left in the game to cut the deficit to 9-14.

Junior Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) netted herself a power-play goal off a pass from Kelly Pepper. Amanda Davio struck a minute later.

Trailing 11-17, the Knights caught fire and scored the next five goals.

Emma Tilma started the streak with Kelly Pepper earning the assist. Pepper added a goal 45 second later.

On a player advantage, junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored her first goal of the game.

Kelly Pepper fooled the Kenyon keeper on a free position shot.

With 4:07 remaining, Emma Verrett sent the ball in into the back of the net on a free position shot.

The Ladies scored the next two goals, including a goal as time expired to win, 19-16.

Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) and freshman Meghan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) both recorded four saves on Saturday.

The Knights were outshot 39-34 against Kenyon

The Maroon and Gold held a 19-17 advance on draw controls. Madeline Baas led Calvin with 11 draw controls.

Kelly Pepper and Emma Verrett led Calvin with four goals.

Kelly Pepper and Alyssa Gagnon finished with a team-high three ground balls.

Leading Calvin was Emma Verrett with two caused turnovers.

The Knights return to Ohio on Friday at Capital.
