GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's basketball fell to Trine at home on Wednesday by a score of 82-59. Calvin falls to an overall record of 2-4 and 1-1 in the MIAA.
Both teams started scoring in the early minutes with Trine getting the first points. The Knights came out and took a 3-2 lead after a made three-pointer by sophomore Sydney Cleary (Middleville, MI / South Christian). The Thunder took full control of in the first quarter as they ran off a 19-3 run. This gave them a 21-6 lead with 1:08 left in the first quarter. Trine took a 21-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Ranked fifth nationally by D3hoops.com, the Thunder (10-1 overall, 4-0 MIAA) maintained and extended their lead in the second quarter as they outscored the Knights 27-10. They went into halftime with a 48-21 lead. Calvin (2-4 overall, 1-1 MIAA) struggled to find scoring on the offensive end as it shot 26.7% from the field in the first half.
The Knights gained energy out of the halftime and tried to cut into the lead. Calvin managed to get it down to 19 after a made free throw by junior Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, CO / Valor Christian) which made it a 59-40 game with 3:23 left. Calvin was unable to mount a big enough comeback however and Trine held onto its lead the remainder of the game.
Calvin was led in scoring by Stephanie Coors with 10 points and followed by sophomore Leah Harris (Frisco, TX / Lone Star) with 9 points. The Knights shot 36.2% from the field and 36.4% from three-point line. Trine outrebounded Calvin 33-26 on the game.
COACHES COMMENT: "Give credit to Trine. They out-physicaled us tonight," said Calvin women's basketball head coach Mark Christner. "We did not have a lot of answers defensively tonight. It's a tough loss but we have to put it behind us and get ready for another Top-5 team on Saturday."
UP NEXT: The Knights will host top-ranked Hope College on Saturday February 20 with tipoff set for 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
