Calvin Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day With Saturday Victory Over Olivet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day against Olivet College on Saturday with a 92-55 victory at Van Noord Arena.

The Knights came out on fire, scoring the first 25 points of the game capped off by a layup from sophomore Mady Vander Zwagg (Holland, MI / Holland Christian). Calvin dominated the rest of the quarter as it took a 29-5 lead heading into the 2nd quarter of play.

Calvin (14-8 overall, 8-5 MIAA) continued to pour on the points by going on a 13-4 run to open the second quarter which was capped off by a three pointer from freshmen Sydney Cleary (Middleville, MI / South Christian). Calvin outscored the Comets 24-11 in the second quarter to take a 53-16 lead heading into halftime. The Knights were shooting 50% from the field and 61.5% from three with eight three pointers in the first half. They also outrebounded them 26-10 and had 16 assists as well.

Calvin controlled the entire second half of the game and kept its large lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Knights went on to win with a 37-point margin of victory. Calvin finished shooting 46.5% from the field and were 10 of 18 from three-point line. The Knights outrebounded the comets 51-28 and had 23 assists.

The leading scorer for the Knights was sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, MI / South Christian) with 15 points and 6 rebounds while sophomore Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, CO / Valor Christian) had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Cleary and sophomore Rebecca Boeve (Grandville, MI / Covenant) both had 9 points.

Prior to the game, Calvin honored seniors Kara Minderhoud and Sydney Houlemard along with senior student assistant coach Alexus Thomas (Little Rock, Arkansas/Little Rock Christian Academy) before the game.

COACHES COMMENT: "This was a great way to honor our program and seniors today," said Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner. "We played hard, purposefully and for each other for 40 minutes. Our bench energy was terrific. It's important for our team to keep moving forward and we eagerly anticipate our next game."

NEXT UP: Calvin has its final regular season home game against Kalamazoo on Wednesday February 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Knights have already clinched a spot in the upcoming six-team MIAA Tournament and need one win out of its final three conference games to secure a first round MIAA Tournament home game.
