KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin's women's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo 70-38 in a conference contest.
The Knights started out with hot shooting out of the gate by going on a 12-3 run in the first six minutes of the game. Kalamazoo fought back to pull within five with a score of 15-7. Calvin took over at that point and went on to close the quarter with five straight threes and held a commanding 27-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Calvin used the big first quarter to dominate the second quarter as well. The team was shooting very impressively from the field and from the free throw line. The Hornets struggled to find much offensive in the first half. Calvin took a 45-23 halftime lead after sophomore Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, CO / Valor Christian) hit a three with 12 seconds left. The Knights made eight threes in the first half and were 9 of 10 from the free throw line.
The Knights outscored Kalamazoo in the 3rd quarter 14-10 and took a 59-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Calvin continued to pull ahead throughout the fourth quarter and the Knights ran away with the 70-38 victory.
Leading the Knights in scoring was sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, MI / South Christian) with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Freshmen Sara Nealy (Highlands Ranch, CO / Valor Christian) and freshmen Leah Harris (Frisco, TX / Lone Star) both ended up with 11 points each.
COACHES COMMENT: "Our approach and execution was on point today," said Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner. "I loved our energy to start the game. Our players up and down the roster continue to grow in helping each other on the court. I've loved this group's response this season. Today was just another example. We didn't let our loss on Wednesday affect. We respected Kalamazoo today through our preparation and got the result. Now its on to the next game."
NEXT UP: Calvin has a home conference matchup against Albion on Wednesday January 22 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
