Calvin Women's Basketball Bounces Bulldogs in Conference Clash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, - Calvin opened the month of January with a 68-50 conference triumph over Adrian College Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena. 

The contest started out with both teams trading baskets in the opening five minutes. Calvin took the lead with a jumper by sophomore Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, MI / Holland Christian) to make it a 10 – 8 with four minutes left in the first quarter. The Knights went on a 7-2 run with a jumper by sophomore Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, CO / Valor Christian) to make it a 17-10 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Adrian quickly went on a 7-0 to tie the game 17-17 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Knights got out to a five-point lead with sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, MI / South Christian) capping off the run with a free throw. Adrian was struggling to score in the second quarter and Calvin used that to its advantage.

The Bulldogs pulled within two with a score of 22-20 but the Knights answered with a 9-2 run which ended with the game's first three pointer by sophomore Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, CO / Castle View) at the buzzer. Calvin took a 29-22 lead into halftime. The Knights had 10 assists at the half and shot 40% from the field.

The Knights came out firing in the third quarter as they started on a 10-0 run within the first minutes of the game, and it gave them a 39-22 lead. Calvin ended up making four threes in the quarter, outscoring Adrian 24-10 to build a 53-32 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Calvin (8-5 overall 2-2 MIAA) cruised from that point on to claim the double-digit win.

Gabby Timmer finished with a double double with 21 points and 15 rebounds while freshman Leah Harris (Frisco, TX / Lone Star) finished with 12 points and 5 assists. Stephanie Coors finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. The Knights shot 43% from the field and were 7 of 20 from the three-point line. The team also had 21 assists, 11 blocks and 9 steals.

COACHES COMMENTS: "I was really pleased with our effort overall," said Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner. "For three plus quarters we really dug in and got defensive stops. Offensively when the ball moves and our players move, we can be very effective. This was a very solid win for us out of the holiday break."
