GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 76-42 non-conference victory over Trinity Christian College Wednesday evening inside Van Noord Arena.
The Knights (6-3) outscored the Trolls (3-9) 18-8 in the opening quarter and put the game away by outscoring Trinity 29-9 in the second half.
Calvin received 33 bench points led by sophomore Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen HS) who pumped in 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range.
Sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) led Calvin in scoring with 16 points while also snaring eight rebounds. Senior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) dropped in 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had nine points and five rebounds. Junior Rebecca Boeve (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) also had nine points and seven rebounds.
Calvin held a 51-45 rebounding edge and finished the game with 19 assists, just two shy of a season-high.
COACHES COMMENT: "I thought our discipline and concentration level tonight was great," said Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner. "It was important for us to get off to a good start. This game will be a important springboard for the next week-and-a-half as we go into conference play."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host rival Hope Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the MIAA opener for the Knights.
