INDIANOLA, Ia. - The Calvin women's basketball team stretched its win streak to three games with a 71-53 victory over Buena Vista University Friday night at the Simpson Thanksgiving Classic.
Calvin (5-2) led 30-24 at halftime and built a 51-42 lead after three quarters. The Knights put the game away by outscoring the opposition 20-11 in the final quarter of play.
Calvin scored 10 unanswered points midway through the fourth quarter to build a 62-50 lead and never looked back from that point on.
Sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) led the scoring charge for the Knights with 25 points on 11 of 15 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds.
Calvin received 29 bench points led by sophomore Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co./Castle View HS) with eight points and sophomore Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen HS) with seven points. Senior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) also had seven points, six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) chipped in six points and seven rebounds.
Calvin shot 45.6 percent from the floor and held a 44-30 rebounding advantage.
COACHES COMMENT: "I was really impressed with our game maturity tonight," said Calvin women's basketball head coach Mark Christner. "I thought we handled some adversity within the game really well. We were aware how they were defending the post and we got the ball inside when the openings were there. Great effort all in all by our group. Now we prepare to play a formidable opponent tomorrow."
NEXT UP: Calvin will face host Simpson at 4 p.m. (EST) on Saturday. Simpson was a 96-58 victor over Concordia-Moorhead of Minnesota Friday night.
