CINCINNATI, Oh. - Calvin picked up a 59-44 road win at Mount St. Joseph University Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Knights outscored the Lions 18-7 in the opening quarter and withstood a late comeback effort from Mount St. Joseph to claim the win.
Calvin led 32-17 at halftime but failed to score in the opening 3:43 of the second half. Calvin held Mount St. Joseph to only 10 third quarter points however as it led 37-27 heading into the final quarter of play.
The Lions (0-3) chipped into the Calvin lead in the fourth quarter, scoring the opening five points to trail 37-32.
Mount St. Joseph closed to within three at 42-39 with 3:46 remaining.
Sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) swished a pair of free throws with 2:37 left to put the Knights up five. Junior Rebecca Boeve (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) also scored a key basket to give the Knights a 46-39 advantage with 1:55 left.
Calvin then connected on 13 free throws inside the final 1:47 to seal the win.
Timmer notched her 14th collegiate double-double in the win including her season of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Senior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) had 12 points and five boards while sophomore Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) had 12 points and freshman Leah Harris (Frisco, Tx./Lone Star HS) 10 points.
Calvin was 18 of 23 from the free throw line in the win.
COACHES COMMENT: "Our team is now 3-0 in true road games so it's a great start in that regard," said Calvin women's basketball coach Mark Christner. "I thought our resolve really grew today. I thought we hung in there when they made a run in the second half and third quarter. Were able to withstand it. It shows some intestinal fortitude. This was a good win ont he road with a big week ahead."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host (NAIA) Northwestern of Iowa on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and then travel to Indianola, Iowa, Thanksgiving Weekend to participate in the Simpson College Storm Classic.
