Calvin Women's Basketball Clips Comets in Conference Caper

Calvin picked up a 70-66 conference victory over Olivet Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena.

The game was a hard-fought contest from start-to-finish with Calvin leading 18-13 after one quarter, Olivet leading 29-28 at halftime and 43-42 after three quarters of play.

Calvin (5-4 overall, 2-1 MIAA) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter however as the Knights solved the Olivet full-court press with long, quick passes.

Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) scored six of the eight points on fast-break layups with senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) feeding her on two buckets and senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) feeding her on another. Freshman Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen HS) then blocked a shot that was rebounded by Warners. Warners whipped a long lead pass to Timmer who converted her fourth straight field goal to give the Knights a 50-43 lead with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter.

livet (4-4 overall, 1-3 MIAA) clawed back to within four but Richards answered with a key three-point shot that put the Knights up 53-46.

Calvin stretched its lead to 11 at 61-50 as Timmer swished a pair of free throws with 3:37 remaining.

Olivet mounted a strong comeback, outcoring the Knights 7-2 to creep to within 63-57.

Olivet's Breanna McCone nailed a three-point shot with 27 seconds left that helped fuel a a 6-2 Comet run. Olivet trailed just 68-66 with 1.8 seconds remaining. Against a full-court press and without a timeout left, the Knights were able to inbounds the ball to freshman Maddie Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS). Vander Zwaag nailed both free throws to seal the win for the Knights.

Timmer led all scorers with 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting to go with seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Richards had 14 points while Warners and sophomore Caitlyn Demaree (St. Louis, Mo./Principia HS) had nine points apiece. Warners also had nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Sophomore Annaka Ediger (Hudsonville, Mich./Hamilton HS) chipped in with five points, seven rebounds, a pair of assists and one blocked shot.

Olivet was led by Fayth Talbert with 20 points while Shawnee Dame had 14 points and 10 boards.

Calvin shot 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the floor but just 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three-point range. The Knights were 23-of-34 (.676) from the free throw line. Olivet shot just 31.9 percent (23-of-72) from the floor. The Comets were 8-of-25 (.320) from three-point range and 12-of-17 (.706) at the free throw line.

Olivet held a 44-42 rebounding advantage including 24-18 on the offensive glass.

Calvin will now break until December 20 and 21 when it travels down to Georgia for a tournament hosted by Oglethorpe University
