GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team beat the Britons of Albion College in a doubleheader with a score of 8-0 in the first game and 9-0 in the second. Both games were decided by the run rule with Calvin winning game one in five innings and game two in six innings.
The Knights were on the board in the first inning as senior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, MI / Caledonia) scored on a wild pitch. This gave Calvin an early 1-0 lead over Albion. Neither team was able to put up any runs in the second and third inning.
Calvin started the scoring again in the fourth as Kennedy Geiger hit a sac fly to center field to score Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, MI / Portage Northern). It didn't stop there as Brooke Timm (Niles, MI / Niles) hit an RBI single to left to score Grace Stock and extend Calvin's lead to 3-0 after the fourth.
The Briton's bats were struggling to get anything going as senior Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, MI / Holland Christian) was pitching a fantastic game. The Knights added to their lead in the fifth with Biddlecome hitting a two-run RBI double to center field and Kali Yant (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg) singling to center to score another run to extend the lead to 6-0.
Calvin added two more runs from a Timm single to left field and run-ruled Albion with a score of 8-0. Horvath, Biddelcome and Timm each had two hits on the day with Timm having three RBIs while Leegwater picked up the win in the pitching circle.
In the second game, Kayla Groen (Frankfort, IL / Lincoln Way East) doubled in the second inning to score Yant. Senior Amber Staniulis (Rockford, MI / Sparta) hit a grounder to shortstop that brought home another run. Calvin claimed an early 2-0 lead. The Knights added two more runs in the fifth thanks to Biddlecome and Grace Stock (Vicksburg, MI / Vicksburg). The Britons again struggled to get anything going at the plate throughout the game.
Calvin was able to add four more runs in the sixth inning with RBI doubles from Horvath and Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, MI / Kalamazoo Christian). Horvath scored on an error while Stock later hit a sac fly to gain a 9-0 lead. The Knights shut them the Britons out in the bottom of sixth to complete the win. Sophomore Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, WI / Grafton) pitched a great game as she only allowed two hits and had eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
Biddlecome, Horvath, Groen and Young each had two hits on the evening with Stock and Horvath having two RBIs each.
COACHES COMMENTS: "I am very happy with our execution today," said Head Coach Becky Hilgert. "We had a plan in place for how to attack Albion offensively and I thought our baserunning and aggressive hitting approach was just as we practiced and was the key to putting the pressure on their defense in both games. Defensively we played strong and made play behind our pitchers who did a good job keeping their hitters off balance. Overall, we had a great team effort today across the board."
UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to St. Mary's to take Albion on at 2 p.m. and St. Mary's at 4 p.m. on Friday April 9 in non-conference games.
