Calvin Softball Drops Doubleheader at Alma

Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at Alma Tuesday afternoon, falling 2-0 and 10-8.

Alma scored the only two runs of the game on a two-run homer by pitcher Haley Ullrich in the bottom of the fifth inning. The hit was one of only three allowed by Calvin senior pitcher Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian High School).

Ullrich allowed four Calvin hits but struck out eight batters and walked only two.

Calvin (8-4 overall, 1-3 MIAA)  had runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth inning but could not come up with a key hit. Alma also played errorless ball in claiming the win.

Calvin built an 8-2 lead but the Scots rallied for six runs in the sixth and scored two in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Junior Addi Warner (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) staked Calvin to a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Calvin added another run in the second and then two more in the third on a two-run RBI single by senior Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS). Calvin built a 7-0 lead before Alma (13-5 overall, 4-0 MIAA) was able to push across its first two runs of the game.

Junior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) gave Calvin an 8-2 lead with an RBI double in the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Alma used six runs on the strength of four hits and three walks to tie the game 8-8.

In the eighth, Alma used three hits and a sacrifice hit to build a 10-8 lead. The Knights were retired in order in the bottom half of the frame to allow Alma to seal the win.

Calvin had 10 hits in defeat. Biddlecome was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) and sophomore Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) had two hits apiece.
