Calvin Softball Splits in Friday Night Play at Allstate Arena

ROSEMONT, Il. - The Calvin softball team split a pair of games late Friday night at Allstate Arena, defeating Buena Vista 2-1 and falling to Lake Forest 8-2. The Knights are now 4-1 on the young season.

GAME ONE
Calvin 2, Buena Vista 1

Calvin scored a pair of runs in the third and used a two-hit, complete-game pitching performance from junior Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) to gain the win.

Borst struck out six and allowed just two hits. The only run scored by Buena Vista was an unearned run in the fifth.

Calvin plated a pair across in the third as freshman Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) singled and then scored on a triple by sophomore Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS).

Junior Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) followed with a triple to bring home Biddlecome to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

Buena Vista (3-4) was retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

Biddlecome had two of Calvin's seven hits.

GAME TWO
Lake Forest 8, Calvin 2

In a meeting of NCAA III Tournament teams from a year ago, Lake Forest came out with the victory. The Foresters (3-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the first but Calvin came back with two in the top of the third as senior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) drove in Duong with an RBI double and Biddlecome brought home Horvath with a run-scoring single.

Lake Forest came back with four runs in the bottom of the third, using four hits and a walk to take a 6-2 lead. Lake Forest tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to provide the final margin of victory.

Horvath had two of Calvin's four hits.

Freshman Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) took the loss with junior Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) later coming to toss four innings of relief.
