Calvin Splits with Alma, Quiggle Homers to Give Calvin Big Win

ALMA, Mich. – The Calvin Softball team split with Alma college in a doubleheader on Thursday evening at Scots Park.

Alma took the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with two homers.

The Scots scored another run in the bottom of the second to take the 4-0 edge.

The Knights got on the board in the top of the third as freshman Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) blasted a double to left center to bring in senior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich. / Chelsea). Next, senior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian)  recorded a single and Biddlecome and junior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia/ Lansing CC) scored to trail by one.

In the top of the fifth, Calvin tied it up 4-4 as Biddlecome singled to Center field and senior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) ran home.

Alma recorded three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take back the lead. Calvin failed to score any runs in the top of the seventh and the Scots walked away with the 7-4 victory.

Calvin took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as DeGroot slammed a triple to right center and Horvath scored. Next up at bat, junior Abi Colon (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) singled to bring in DeGroot.

Alma tied the game up in the top of the second including one homer.

In the top of the fifth, the Scots took the 3-2 lead.

Calvin answered in the bottom of the fifth as junior Grace Quiggle (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian)  blasted a homer bringing in DeGroot and herself to take the 4-3 lead.

As neither team was able to record any runs in the sixth or seventh inning, it was Calvin that walked away with the victory.

Senior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa / Valley)  picked up her fourth win in the circle with eight strikeouts.

COACHES QUOTE: Becky Hilgert stated, "It was good to bounce back in game two and get the win. Alma is not an easy place to play and their teams are always tough and well coached. In game one, I was happy that we kept battling and came back to take the lead, however we just had a few offensive opportunities slip away. In game two, scoring first was huge for our confidence and again that is something we are really trying to focus on. Quiggle really stepped up when we needed it and had the big homerun and Anna finished strong on the mound. No games in the conference are easy, so we'll keep getting after it and look forward to hosting Albion Saturday."

NEXT UP:  The Knights return to action on Saturday as they host Albion for a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
