NAPERVILLE, Il. - The Calvin men's track and field team took sixth place at the North Central College Invitational on Saturday with a final team score of 47 points.
Calvin picked up its first points of the meet in the distance medley relay as the quartet of freshman Coleton Jensen (New Era, Mich./Montague HS), junior Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Thomas Noble (Lakewood, Co./Denver Christian HS) and senior Jason Klaasen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) took sixth with a time of 11:04.14.
Freshman Lucas VanderPloeg (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) picked up an eighth place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.72.
The Knights picked up a slew of points in the 3,000 meter run as four Calvin runners placed inside the top five. Junior Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) led the charge by winning the race in a career-best time of 8:27.46 that currently ranks 14th nationally. Senior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was right behind in second with a time of 8:28.78 that ranks 15th nationally. Senior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was third in a time of 8:32.14 that ranks 21st on the national (NCAA III) indoor list. Sophomore Ryan Vreek (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) also had a strong race, placing fifth in a time of 8:58.84.
In the pole vault, senior Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) continued his strong indoor campaign as he placed fourth (13-11 1/4).
Senior Nate Van Whye (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) placed seventh in the long jump (21-1 1/4) while senior Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) scored in the shot put, uncorking a throw of 44-5 1/2.
Calvin is back in action on Friday when it competes at an invitational hosted by Aquinas College.
