ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin picked up a crucial 7-2 conference victory at Adrian on Wednesday to move into third place in the MIAA standings, improving to 11-7 overall and more importantly to 4-2 in conference play.
Calvin pulled out three hard-fought doubles points to take early control in the match.
"The doubles were just huge," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "Adrian is an extremely challenging place to win at on the road. To get three doubles points gave our team a huge boost of confidence."
Fueled with the momentum of doubles play, Calvin closed out the match by winning four of the six singles points.
Larrea defeated Nathan Waterbury 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Stallings was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Ronald Ducharme at No. 3 singles. Shapiro topped Kyle Haines 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Brandon Johnson (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) picked up the final Calvin point with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Cameron Rafinski at No. 5 singles.
"We knew it would be a challenging match," said Ross. "Our guys were ready to compete which was great to see. We have a week to get ready for our final conference match with the goal of advancing to our league tournament."
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Trine for a 4 p.m. conference match.
