Men’s Tennis Sinks Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team got back in the win column on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights picked up a 6-3 victory on the road at Spring Arbor. The victory propels Calvin to 9-2 on the season and sends Spring Arbor to 12-6.

"I am happy with the energy we showed today," said head coach John Ross. "We set the tone in doubles play and rode the momentum into singles play. We now have to focus on a tough match on Saturday."

Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stalling (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) struck first on Wednesday at No. 3 doubles. The duo downed Thomas Hall and Patrick Doerr, 8-3.

Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) and senior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) topped Alex Reinbold and Ryan MacLean at No. 2 doubles, 8-6.

Junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) edged Nick Romano at Jonah Engle at No. 1 doubles, 9-8.

Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán defeated Nick Romano at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.

The Cougars tightened the match winning the next three points.

David Brown bounced Jonah Engle at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 6-4.

Max Stallings closed the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory over Sam Head.

The Knights open MIAA action on Saturday at Alma.
