No. 3 Calvin Men's Soccer Blasts By Bulldogs in Front of Homecoming Crowd

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team celebrated Homecoming Weekend with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Adrian Bulldogs in front of nearly 800 fans at Zuidema Field.

Ranked third nationally, the Knights (11-1-0) scored four times in the first half and added two quick goals to open the second half to build a 6-0 lead.

Sophomore Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand HS) opened the scoring for the Knights with a blast from just inside the 18-yard box that went top shelf just inside the far post. The goal by Twigg came in the 14th minute and ignited a three-goal Calvin burt in a span of 2:50. Senior Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got loose for a breakaway goal on a nifty feed from senior Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich./Canton HS). Freshman Justin Wojcik (Canton, Mich./Plymouth HS) then scored his first collegiate goal in the 16th minute, cranking in a shot off a tight angle in the 16th minute of play.

Freshman Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tapped in his third goal of the year in the 30th minute with Adams and Twigg playing a quick one-two passing combination to set up the score.

Wojcik added a goal in the 47th minute with Olson scoring in the 53rd minute.

Adrian (8-3-0) scored its lone goal in the 54th minute.

Calvin finished the game with a 22-7 shots at goal advantage. Freshman Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tallied three saves to pick up the win in goal for the Knights.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was such a great night," said Souders. "A huge credit to the Calvin community and all of our alums for coming out tonight. I thought our guys played really well. They moved the ball, created chances, and overall just got the job done. Now we head into MIAA season with a big one Tuesday out in Holland. We would love to see the same kind of support out there."

NEXT UP: Calvin will open its 2019 MIAA campaign next Tuesday at rival Hope in a match slated to start at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Stadium.
