KENOSHA, Wisc. - Calvin stretched its win streak to six games with a 2-0 victory at Carthage College Friday night.
Ranked 11th nationally, Calvin improves to 7-1-0 on the season. Friday's contest marked a meeting of 2018 NCAA III Tournament teams as Carthage competed in an NCAA III Regional last November.
Calvin struck first in the 26th minute as senior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) ripped in his second goal of the season, blasting in a rebound off a shot originally struck by sophomore Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand).
Calvin nearly doubled its lead early in the second half with a series of quality chances around the Carthage goal but the Red Men remained resolute and pressed back. Junior goalkeeper Chris Morrish (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) came up with several key plays for the Knights in and around the box to keep Carthage off the scoreboard.
Senior Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the clinching goal in the 80th minute, racing through the right side of the box and slotting home a shot past a charging Carthage goalkeeper.
Morrish finished the match with four saves and proved crucial in the Calvin win, playing the ball consistently out the back while snaring several crosses into the goalmouth. The shutout was the second of the season for Morrish and his 12th in a Calvin uniform.
The Knights finished the match with a 15-13 shots at goal advantage. Each team was charged with 20 fouls with a combined six yellow cards issued between the two sides.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was good to get a win despite not being at our best," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Credit Carthage. They had long spells of the game made us work for that one. But our guys found a way. Chris (Morrish) was fantastic in the back tonight and despite not wanting to utilize him, he really earned the shutout tonight."
NEXT UP: Calvin will face Greenville (Il.) at 5 p.m. (CDT) at Carthage Saturday afternoon. The contest will feature a rematch of a 2018 First Round NCAA III Tournament match that Calvin won 4-0.
