Calvin Men's Soccer Stands Alone in First Place After Shutout Win Over Bulldogs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The third-rankedCalvin men's soccer team claimed a 2-0 conference victory over Adrian Saturday night at Zuidema field in a meeting of undefeated MIAA teams.

The Knights recorded an early goal as junior Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich. / Lansing Christian) found junior Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and he fired one from just inside the 18-yard box to put the Knights up 1-0 in the fifth minute of play. This was Weldy's fourth goal on the season. 

Three minutes later, Calvin posted another goal as this time Lyon found senior Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) and he launched one past the keeper to record his second goal of the season. 

Calvin maintained majority of possession the second half. The Knights struck again in the 81st minute as Vegter found senior Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Iowa / Hempstead) and at the end of a throw in and he headed it into the net. This was McCaw's 11thgoal on the season as he is the leading scorer for the Knights.  

Just over a minute later, junior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and McCaw found junior Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich. / Canton) off of a dummy pass and he blasted one in the net and the Knights claimed the 4-0 victory. 

Calvin outshot Adrian 15-1. Calvin goal keeper sophomore Chris Morrish (Bradenton, FL. / Stephan's Episcopal School) had one save on goal to help the Knights shut out the Bulldogs.

Head Coach Ryan Souders stated, "Adrian was undefeeated in the league for a reason and we knew they would give us a good test. This was a great conference result for our team. Now it's on to next week week." 

The Knights are now 12-1 on the season and 4-0 in the MIAA. 

Calvin will travel to Olivet College Wednesday, October 17th to take on the Comets at 4 p.m.
