Calvin Men's Soccer Holds Takes Out Aquinas in Crosstown Rivalry Match

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Aquinas on Tuesday night. The Knights remain perfect on the season with the victory, improving to 5-0 overall.

Calvin is currently ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. The Knights moved up two spots from last week's ranking.

The Knights took an early lead on a Saints' own goal less than two minutes in. Calvin outshot Aquinas 14-2 in the first half, but did not find the back of the net again until the second half.

In the 52nd minute, senior Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) widened the Knights' lead to two with a goal assisted by seniors Daniel Norton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead).

The Saints made it a one-goal game in the 64th minute when Franco Calabrese capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity. However, the Knights were able to hang on and claim the road victory.

Calvin outshot Aquinas 24-3 in the winning effort.

"It's great to get a win," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Aquinas played really well and has a good squad. I don't think we were necessarily at our best tonight but to get a win on the road is a good result. We'll take it, learn some lessons from its and move forward."

The Knights are back in action this weekend when they travel to Benedictine University to take on the Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
