ANDERSON, Ind. - Cavin improved to 3-1 on the season with a 23-5 victory at Anderson University Saturday afternoon.
Calvin led 6-2 after one quarter of play and outscored the host Ravens 8-0 in the second quarter to build a 14-2 lead. The Knights did not look back from there.
Calvin had 12 different players score at least one goal led by senior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) who scored five goals to go with three assists and four ground balls. He was also 23 of 31 on faceoff opportunities.
Sophomore Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) had three goals, three assists and five ground balls. Junior Derek Sanchez (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had two goals, an assist and six ground balls. Junior Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./Jerome HS) had two goals, two assists and three ground balls. Freshman Ethan Curtis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) also had a pair of goals.
Sophomore Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) got the start in goal and produced seven saves in one half of play. Senior Mitchell Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) went the final 30 minutes and recorded a pair of saves.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great team effort today," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "We played good disciplined lacrosse and were able to get a lot of our young guys experience. It was great to see some guys get their first collegiate goal. We're looking forward to getting back to work next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Marietta (Oh.) next Saturday at Grand Rapids Christian High School with opening faceoff set for noon.
