GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season with a 15-6 victory over Wabash College Saturday afternoon at Eagles Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School.
Calvin scored nine second quarter goals to break the game open and never looked back. The Knights led 4-2 after one quarter of play and held a 13-3 lead at halftime.
Calvin dominated face-off opportunities, winning 20 of 25 faceoffs.
Sophomore Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) was a force in his Calvin debut with five goals.
Senior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and younger brother - sophomore Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) had big afternoons. Chase Sparling had a goal, four assists, five ground balls and won 20 of 25 faceoff opportunities. Griffin Sparling had two goals, three assists and five ground balls.
Junior Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) had a goal and two assists.
Senior Nick Pitre (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) scooped up six ground balls.
In goal, sophomore Evan Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Howell HS) had 12 saves on 16 shots on goal. Senior Mitchell Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) also saw time in goal and collected a pair of saves.
COACHES COMMENT: "Our offense was really clicking today," said Calvin men's lacrosse head coach Dave Hoger. "We were very disciplined with the ball and were patient in finding high percentage opportunities. Our defense got a lot better as the game went on and our newcomers on the field really stepped up in a big way. It's always good to get the first (victory) one and the guys are excited to get back to work Monday."
NEXT UP: Calvin travels to Heidelberg University next Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest in Tiffin, Ohio.
