Calvin Topples Trine In Conference Battle

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's Lacrosse team defeated Trine University in a conference battle on Tuesday evening at Zuidema Field.

The Knights came out strong as they took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as sophomore Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill. / Grayslake Central), junior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and sophomore Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind. / John Adams) all recorded two goals each.

With the second quarter underway, Trine finally put a stop to Calvin's streak and went on a three-goal streak of their own to tighten the score 6-3.

Senior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind. / Heritage Christian) put a stop to Trine's run as he connected with the back of the net.

With under a minute in the half, The Thunder recorded one more goal to make it 7-4 as the half concluded.

The Knights struck first the second half as Jindra connected with senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) to put Calvin up by four.

Five minutes later, senior Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) had a huge breakaway and blasted one in the back of the cage to put Calvin up 9-4.

Trine didn't make it easy for Calvin however as the Thunder fought back tightening the game to within three.

Boelens was able to connect on a goal, but Trine once again answered as they scored two more goals and as the first quarter closed out, Trine trailed 10-8.

Bontreger on fire, scorched two straight goals early in the fourth to give Calvin the four-goal edge.

Trine battled back so score two straight goals of their own to put the contest back to within two goals as Calvin lead 12-10.

The Knights continued to fight however and went on to record three more goals from freshman Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi), Boelens and Jindra to walk away with the 15-10 victory.

Leading the Knights was Boelens with four goals and two assists. Jindra and Bontreger both claimed hat tricks and one assist each. Nedd, Foster and Sparling all had one goal each.

Sophomore Gerrit Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) had a huge day in the net picking up his ninth win of the season and posted 15 saves. Kurtycz also hit his 200 season saves mark.

Head Coach Dave Hoger stated, "We came out fast which gave us a good buffer zone. We knew we were going to face some adversity; Trine is a very good team and they make good adjustments. We battled through, when they started to make the comeback, we showed a lot of grit and we overcame adversity and were able to keep that buffer and keep that lead to get us that victory and it was a total team effort."

Calvin will now await the outcome of Saturday's Alma/Trine game to see if it qualifies their team for the MIAA Tournament. If Alma wins, Calvin qualifies or the tournament. If Trine wins, Trine and Alma advance over Calvin due to a conference tiebreaker rule.
