GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the third time this year and for the fourth time in his career, Calvin senior Derrick DeVries has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Covenant Christian High School, DeVries posted back-to-back double-double performances last week as the Knights claimed road victories at Olivet and rival Hope.
In a 79-53 win at Olivet Wednesday night, DeVries scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. He followed with 35 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in an 84-59 win at Hope on Saturday. Saturday's scoring output marked the sixth 30-point game of the season for DeVries. His Saturday effort also marked his seventh double-double of the season including the 12th of his career.
Over the course of the week, DeVries averaged 29.5 points and 12.0 rebounds a game while connecting on 51.3 percent (20 of 39) of his field goal attempts including 84.2 percent (16 of 19) at the free throw line.
Last month, DeVries was named to the Top 100 Watch list for the Bevo Francis Award which honors the top small college player (Division II, III and NAIA) in the country.
DeVries is the MIAA scoring leader with 257 points in 10 conference games.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Trine University for a key 7:30 p.m. conference contest.
