ST. PETERSBURG, Fla, - Calvin defeated Skidmore College 84-64 Friday morning at the St. Pete Classic behind a barrage of three-point shots.
The Knights got things going early by opening the game on a 11-4 run that was capped off by a jumper by senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, MI / Calvin Christian). Skidmore responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead by one with 13 minutes left in the first. The threes started falling for Calvin though which ignited a 17-0 run with Calvin taking a 28-12 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.
Calvin dominated the rest of the first half to take a 45-29 lead into halftime. Calvin was 16 of 28 from the field and 9 of 13 from three. Junior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) had 15 points at the half and was 3-3 from the three-point line while senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) had 13 points as well.
Calvin continued its hot shooting in the second half and got out to 56-33 lead in the first five minutes of play. The Knights (5-5 overall) stretched the lead to 30 points, leading 68-38 and outplayed the Thoroughbreds the rest of the way.
Calvin finished with an impressive 60% clip from three-point line by going 15 of 25. The Knights also shot 48% from the field by going 29 of 60.
Derrick DeVries finished with a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds while senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had 19 points and was 5-6 from the three points line. Shymanski finished with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists.
