ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Calvin cruised to 97-73 win over Emory & Henry Friday morning at the St. Pete Classic.
The Knights were in a close contested match with the Wasps early on with both teams getting the offense going early. The score was 10-10 when the Knights went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead with senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) converting four of those points. Once Calvin got the lead, it never let go through the rest of the first half. Emory & Henry got within three at 28-25 after hitting a triple with four minutes left in the half.
The Knights outscored the Wasps 13-6 over the final four minutes to take a 41-31 halftime lead. DeVries and junior Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) had a great half with 16 points apiece. Calvin shot 51% from the field in the first half and 44% from three-point range.
Calvin went on a 13-4 run to open the second half, sparked by back-to-back threes by junior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) and DeVries. Calvin (4-5 overall) claimed a 69-49 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the second half and dominated the rest of the way. The Knights shot 58% from the field and 41% from three in the second half.
Derrick DeVries finished 26 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists while Emmett Warners had 21 points and 7 rebounds. Senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, MI / Calvin Christian) also had a good game with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists while shooting going 4-8 from the three-point line. Calvin finished 37 of 67 from the field and 11 of 26 from the three-point line.
With his 26 points, DeVries moved past Dan Davis and Kyle VanderBrug into 15th place on the Calvin career scoring list. DeVries now has 1,136 career points.
