Calvin Falls to Aquinas in Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin fell to Aquinas College on Friday night in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Cornerstone University by a score of 84-60.

The first half started slowly for each team with neither getting into a good rhythm early. It was also a very foul heavy first half with each team getting six fouls in the first eight minutes. Junior Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) got going early with two threes and getting Calvin within two points with a score of 12-10.

Aquinas got hot quickly and went on a 12-2 run to take a 24-12 lead with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the first half. The Knights could not get going offensively during the rest of the half however and were outscored 26-8 over the final minutes of the opening frame. During this run, senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) became the 26th player in Calvin men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point club.

Calvin came out with energy to start the second half and went on a 10-4 run to pull within fifteen. Junior Thad Shymanski (Ada, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) rattled off nine quick points in the early minutes of the half, but Aquinas still had answers for all of Calvin's scoring.

The Saints pulled back to a twenty-point lead and were up 69-49 with 11 minutes left in the game. Aquinas held the lead the reminder of the 2nd half and won 84-60.

Derrick DeVries led the Knights in scoring with 18 points while Thad Shymanski had 15 points as well. With his 18-point effort, DeVries boosts his career scoring total to 1,013 points, passing Dan Aultman and Bryan Powell for 25th and 24th on the Calvin career scoring list.

UP NEXT: Calvin plays Cornerstone in the second game of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame classic on Saturday at 8 p.m. with Hope facing Aquinas in the Saturday opener at 6 p.m. Cornerstone defeated Hope 77-74 in Friday's second game.
