ROCK ISLAND, Il. - Calvin dropped a hard-fought 70-67 decision at No. 17 Augustana College Saturday night to even its season record at 1-1.
The Knights had chance to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds but a potential go-ahead three-point shot was off the mark. The host Vikings helped seal the win with a free throw with a pair of seconds left on the clock.
Calvin trailed 36-34 at halftime. The Knights opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take a 45-38 lead capped off by a three-point shot by senior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS).
The Knights held a 61-60 advantage with 5:54 remaining but Augustana connected on a three-point shot to take the lead and never trailed again.
Senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) led Calvin with 24 points and seven rebounds while DeWitte had 15 points. Junior Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) dropped in 12 points while senior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 10.
Calvin shot 40 percent from the floor and was 15 of 17 (.882) from the free throw line but committed 15 turnovers.
COACHES COMMENT: "We played extremely hard but we made a few too many mistakes to beat a good team like Augustana on the road," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall. "Our execution was not where it needed to be. The effort was there but the overall execution was not. We'll get back at it in practice and get ready for another tough road game next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Anderson University next Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
