Calvin Men's Basketball Clips Kalamazoo in Conference Contest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin chalked up an 83-71 victory over visiting Kalamazoo Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena. The Knights improve to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Calvin fell behind 9-0 in the opening moments of the game but responded with a 21-7 run to take a 21-16 lead with 7:40 left in the first half. Calvin then used a 10-4 run to take a 37-28 halftime lead.

The Knights later built a 71-53 lead on old-fashioned three-point play by senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS) with 5:34 remaining.

Kalamazoo refused to quit, chipping into the Calvin lead. The Hornets sliced the deficit down to single digits, trailing 79-71 with 47 seconds remaining. Calvin closed out the game with four free throws in the final 38 seconds.

The Knights featured strong scoring balance led by junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) with 19 points and six boards.

Junior guard Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had a season-high 18 points, one shy of matching his career-high. DeWitte was 5 of 8 from the floor, 3 of 4 from three-point range and 5 of 5 from the free throw line.

Senior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma HS) tossed in 11 points off the bench on 5 of 7 shootin while snaring six rebounds. Senior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Amoros-Gutierrez scored nine points, dished out three assists and collected a pair of steals. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) corralled eight rebounds with sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) adding eight points. Freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) had four points and a team-high five assists.

Tanner Blyly led Kalamazoo with 21 points while Bass Ollie had 18.

Calvin held a 41-32 rebounding advantage.

The Knights are now just a game out of first place in the jumbled MIAA standings heading into a key MIAA road contest at Albion on Saturday scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
