HOLLAND, Mich, - Calvin fell to La Roche College 74-68 on day two of the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Hope College.
Calvin led 39-35 at halftime, shooting 48.4 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes. The Knights were able to build a 14-point advantage early in the second half as an 14-4 run allowed Calvin to hold a 53-39 advantage with 12:40 remaining.
Calvin still led by 14 at 55-41 on a layup by freshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) with 11:42 left but the Knights missed their next five shots while La Roche caught fire, ripping off 19 unanswered points to take a 60-55 lead with 6:21 left in regulation.
Calvin (5-6) closed to within a point on two occassions inside the final five minutes but not retake the lead. La Roche came up with a key putback with 50 seconds left to take a 72-68 lead and sealed the game with a pair of free throws.
Junior Derrick DeVries led Calvin with 26 points and nine rebounds, en route to landing a spot on the Great Lakes Invitational all-tournament team.
Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had 13 points while sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Meulenberg chipped in with seven points apiece.
Calvin shot 49.1 percent overall but just 15.8 percent (3 of 19) from three-point range. The Knights were also just 11 of 23 (.364) from the free throw line. La Roche (9-2) was led by Zach Gould with 19 points. The Red Birds shot 42.4 percent overall and 36.8 percent (7 of 19) from three-point range. La Roche also held a 40-34 rebounding advantage including 13-8 on the offensive glass. The score was tied seven times during the game with the lead changing hands 10 times.
The Knights will now break until January 3 when they host Adrian at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
