KALAMAZOO, Mich, - The Calvin baseball team fell to Kalamazoo in a single nine inning game with a score of 10-7 and to fall to 6-7 on the season.
The Knights were the first team to get a run on the board with a Nick Vogel (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) RBI single to give them a 1-0 lead. Senior Peter VanDyken (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) pitched well in his two innings of action as he shut out the Hornets in the first two innings with one strikeout.
Calvin used the top of the third inning to score four runs and extend its lead. It started with J.C Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) hitting an RBI double to the score first run. Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterfod Mott) hit an RBI single to score Tommy Ballenger and scored the second run of the inning. Fortmann scored off a wild pitch and Hung scored of an RBI single by Matt Raymond to give them a 5-0 lead.
Kalamazoo responded in that same inning with four runs of its own and the score was 5-4 after the third. In the top of the fourth inning, the Knights added two more runs to extend their lead. Sophomore Tommy Gallagher (Traverse City, MI / Traverse City St. Fancis) stepped up to the plate and hit a huge homerun for their first run of the inning.
Andrew Ballenger (Columbus, OH / Cuyahoga CC) doubled with two outs and Fortmann singled to score Ballenger giving Calvin the 7-4 lead. The Hornets fought back hard though as they scored in the bottom on the fourth to make it a 7-5 game. Kalamazoo controlled innings five through seven as they outscored Calvin 5-0 to take a 10-7 lead heading into the eighth inning.
Calvin didn't get any good chances in the top of the eighth and ninth inning and fell to Kalamazoo with a score of 10-7. The Knights move to 6-7 overall on the season and 2-2 in the MIAA. Fortmann had a great game with three hits and two RBIs while Ballenger and Raymond each finished with two hits.
UP NEXT: Calvin will host Kalamazoo in a doubleheader on Friday April 2 with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
