GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Alma, losing the first game 13-3 and winning a dramatic come-from-behind game two 10-9.
The first game of the doubleheader saw the Scots take an early 6-0 lead after the first inning and added three more in the second. Alma had a 9-0 lead heading into the fourth inning and the Knights finally got on the scoreboard after a sac fly by senior Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg).
Alma answered in the top of the fifth inning with four more runs to extend its lead to 13-1. Calvin added two more runs with RBI singles from J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) and Tommy Gallaher (Traverse City, MI / Traverse City St. Francis), but it wasn't enough for them and they fell to Alma 13-3.
In the second game of the double header, the Scots gained an early 1-0 in the top of the first. But the Knights came right back with back-to-back doubles by Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) and Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) that tied the game at 1-1. Andrew Ballenger (Columbus, OH / Cuyahoga CC) reached on a fielder's choice while scoring Vogel to take the 2-1 lead.
Alma scored two runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead at 3-2, but it didn't last long as Penn hit an RBI double to center field to tie it at 3-3. The Scots weren't going away though as they scored two runs in the top of fourth and four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. Calvin started to get the bats going again in the bottom of the fifth as Ballenger hit a two-run RBI single to make it a 9-5 game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Calvin came alive as the Knights strung five straight hits together. Gallagher, Vogel, and Ballenger each had an RBI single while Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) had a two-run RBI single. The five-run inning gave the Knights a 10-9 lead heading to the top of the seventh inning. Senior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, MI / Jenison) came into the game for Calvin and quickly got the first two batters out. A few batters later the bases were loaded, but VanDuyn struck out the final batter to get the save and secure the 10-9 win for Calvin.
Vogel and Ballenger each had a huge day at the plate with three hits while Vogel had two RBIs and Ballenger had four RBIs. Penn, Pompey and Petersen each finished with two hits on the day as well. Eli Johnson (Stillwater, OK / Stillwater) gets the win and VanDuyn gets the save for the Knights.
COACHES COMMENT: "After a tough first game and all being a good hitting team, it was great to see our team battle back," said Head Coach Kevin VanDuyn. "A good team win today, and I hope It is something that kickstarts our guys and keeps the momentum going for us. I think what I am most proud is how when things didn't go our way, we had guys step in and battle back."
UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo for a single game on Tuesday March 30 at 4 p.m.
