ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team split its doubleheader at Alma by winning the first game 4-1 and losing the second game 14-10 on Friday afternoon.
In the first game of the double-header, the Knights got on the board early in the first inning. Senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) singled to left field to score Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) to give them a 1-0 lead. The second inning saw Calvin scoring another run with Dylan Williams (Cedar Springs MI / Cedar Springs) hitting an RBI single to score Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) and Calvin was up 2-0 heading to the third inning.
The Knights added a run in the fourth and seventh innings thanks to RBI singles by Pompey and Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) to extend Calvin's lead to 4-0. Alma was able to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run, but senior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, MI / Jenison) shut them down the rest of the inning. Van Duyn improved to 2-1 on the season and upped his career pitching record to 14-12. He is now in a three-way tie for 10th place on the Calvin career list for pitching victories.
VanDuyn pitched a complete game for the Knights and only allowed five hits, one run and struck out five batters on the day. Pomepy and Williams each finished with two hits and RBI for the Calvin and the Knights had eight total hits in the game.
The second game of the day had the Knights leading after two innings with a score of 4-3. Sophomore Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) and Pompey each had an RBI double to help give Calvin the 4-3 lead. Alma battled back in the next three innings by outscoring Calvin 10-1 with a huge eighth run inning in the 5th. The Scots led the Knights 13-5 after five.
Calvin started to cut into the deficit with a three-run inning in the 6th. Penn had an RBI single while Padilla came up to the plate next and hit a RBI double. The Scots scored another run in the bottom of the 6th to make it a 14-8 game with the Knights having one last chance.
Junior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford) hit a two-run homerun in the 7th inning, but it was all Calvin could score and fell to Alma 14-10. Padilla had a great game with four hits and three RBIs while Pompey had three hits and one RBI.
UP NEXT: The Knights will host Alma in a double header tomorrow afternoon with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
