WESTFIELD, IN – The Calvin baseball team split its games on Saturday afternoon at Grand Park in Indiana. They lost to Albion with a score of 18-6 in the first game but ended the day with a walk off 9-8 upset win over No. 17 Adrian.
In the first game of the day, the Knights struggled to get the bats going and the Britons managed to find their swing early. After seven innings, Albion led Calvin 4-0 heading into the eighth inning.
Things took a turn for the worst for Calvin in the eighth inning as Albion scored 14 runs in the inning to take a 18-0 lead heading into the ninth inning. The Knights were able to put some runs together in the ninth after a double by Jeff Erickson (Boulder, CO / Fairview) to score a run, and a three-run RBI triple by Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North). This wasn't enough for a major comeback and the Knights lost to Albion 18-6.
In the second game of the day, Calvin took on the nationally-ranked Adrian Bulldogs. The early innings saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 6-0 lead after three innings of play with three home runs and an RBI single. Calvin was able to answer back in the bottom of the third with a Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) RBI double and an RBI single by Penn.
The Knights weren't done putting runs on the scoreboard as the bottom of the fifth came into action. It started with Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the next batter Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) hit a bases clearing double to left center. Matthew Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) hit a two-run home run the very next at bat to give Calvin an 8-6 lead heading into the sixth inning.
Both teams were held scoreless the next three innings and it all came down to the ninth. The Bulldogs (5-5 overall) scored two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 8-8 with Calvin having the last at bat. Will Mueller (Aurora, IL / Metea Valley) was on first after a walk and sophomore Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) hit a single to left field to get a runner in scoring position. Pompey stepped up to the plate and hit the clutch single to left field to score the runner and walk it off for the Calvin Knights with a score of 9-8.
Vogel finished with two hits and three RBIs while teammates Pompey and Vogel each had two hits and two RBIs. The Knights (4-4 overall) outhit the Bulldogs 14-9 and Eli Johnson got the win for the Knights on the mound.
UP NEXT: Calvin will head to Alma College on Friday March 26 for a double header. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m.
