GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin baseball dropped both ends of a double-header against rival Hope College on Friday afternoon. The Knights fell 5-2 in the first game and 9-8 in the second.
In the first game of the double header, the Knights were the first to get a run on the board in the third inning. After a double to right field by Andrew Ballenger (Columbus, OH / Cuyahoga CC) and advancing to third on a fielder's choice, he then was able to score on a wild pitch to give Calvin an early 1-0 lead.
A couple of innings later Hope battled right back into the game. In the fifth inning, the Flying Dutch got their bats going and put up five runs in the inning. The Knights were able to get another run thanks to a Ballenger sac fly in the seventh inning but couldn't manage to score any more runs the rest of the game.
Senior Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) went 3-for-3 hitting in the game while junior Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) went 2-for-3. Ballenger finished with the one RBI and the Knights outhit the Flying Dutch 7-5, but it wasn't enough. Senior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) went the distance for Calvin and took the loss. VanDuyn tossed no-hit ball through four innings of play and finished with six strikeouts and three walks.
In the second game of the double-header, Calvin was the designated away team. The Knights started hot out of the gate as Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) hit a two-run RBI single to left to give Calvin an early 2-0 advantage. The lead didn't last long, as Hope scored six straight runs in the next three innings to take a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.
The Knights weren't backing down, as Damion Pompey came up to the plate and hit a three-run homerun in the fourth to make the score 6-5. Calvin scored two more runs in the sixth inning thanks to a two-run RBI double by Caden Penn. Calvin added another run in the eighth with Nick Vogel hitting an RBI single to give Calvin an 8-6 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hope regained the lead after multiple errors by Calvin and scored three runs to make it a 9-8 game heading into the ninth inning. The Knights had men in scoring position with two outs left but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Calvin fell to Hope with a score of 9-8.
Pompey was 3-for-5 at the plate and finished with three RBIs while teammates Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) and Vogel each had a pair of RBIs as well. The Knights also out-hit the Flying Dutch 14-8 but finished with three errors to Hope's two. Calvin falls to 3-3 on the season as these were nonconference games.
UP NEXT: Calvin travels to Grant Park tomorrow to play in Westfield, Indiana, against Albion at 11 a.m. and Adrian at 2 p.m.
