Calvin Baseball Closes Out Chicago Swing With Doubleheader Split

WHEATON, Il. - The Calvin baseball team split games on Saturday as it defeated the University of Chicago 9-2 and fell to Wheaton College 13-9. The Knights are 3-1 on the season.

The Knights started Saturday off by playing the University of Chicago. The Maroons took an early lead in the top of the 1st inning after an error to take a 1-0 lead. The Knights answered quickly in the 2nd inning after a few wild pitches and a pair of singles by Andrew Ballenger and Caden Penn. Calvin took a 4-1 lead heading into the 3rd inning.

A double by Ballenger and a single by Will Baldwin with runners in scoring position extended Calvin's lead to 6-1 after the 3rd inning. The next four innings neither team was able to put any runs on the board until the 8th inning when Chicago cut the deficit to 6-2.

Calvin answered by using Chicago fielding errors and wild pitches along with a sac bunt by Baldwin to extend the lead to 9-2. Eli Johnson (Stillwater, OK / Stillwater) closed out the Maroons in the top of the 9th inning to get Calvin the win. Zach Thor (Woodbury, MN / New Life Academy) tossed seven innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts before departing prior to the eighth inning. The Knights had five players have two hits each while Baldwin and Ballenger each had two RBIs.

In the second game of the day, the Knights took on Wheaton College. The Thunder gained a large lead early as they jumped out to a 9-1 lead heading the 3rd inning. Calvin was able to climb back into the game as it scored three runs after a base-clearing double by senior Damion Pompey. The Knights gained another run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to four at 9-5.

Calvin continued to cut into the deficit in the seventh inning as it scored on a fielding error. An Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) single pulled them with two. The Thunder scored another in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning to extend their lead to 13-7. Dylan Williams (Cedar Spring, MI / Cedar Springs) had a two-run RBI single in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough for the Knights as they fell short and lost their first game of the season 13-9.

Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy), Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) and Andrew Hung had two hits apiece while Pompey finished with three RBIs. The Thunder out hit the Knights 14-12 and had more RBIs with eleven to Calvin's six.

UP NEXT: Calvin heads to Grant Park in Indiana to take on rival Hope in a non-conference double-header on Friday March 19. The first game starts at 11 a.m.
