The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team were defeated by the Davenport University Panthers 5-3 on Saturday night.
Going into Saturday's game the Knights went in on a two game win streak to start the season and looked to continue on the winning track. Sadly, for the Knights the Panthers came to ruin the party and put an end to the Knights early season success.
In the first period the Panthers came out very strong and quickly put high pressure on the Knights defense. Just four minutes in the Panthers found a way past the Knights defense and quickly took a 1-0 lead. The Knights pushed back hard and were rewarded about half way through the period with a goal from Kyle Van Dusen with the assists coming from Jacob Siebenga and Ethan Bock. Sadly, for the Knights their game tying goal did not seem so good three minutes later as the Panthers once again found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead. With under a minute to go in the period, it went from bad to worse for the Knights as the Panthers got a quick powerplay goal to take the 3-1 lead heading into the second period.
At the end of the first period the Knights found themselves trailing the Panthers 3-1. The Knights were also outshot 10-14.
In the second period the Knights began to shift the momentum in their favor. About three minutes into the period the Knights got another tally on the board with a goal from Cal Erdmann with the assist from Josh Hartlein. With the Knights only down one goal they look to keep the pressure and intensity up on the Panthers back end. The Knights recieved multiple scoring chances but could not find a way past the Panthers goaltender.
At the end of the second period the Panthers led the Knights 3-2. The Knights outshot the Panthers 16-8.
In the third period the game began to go end to end with great scoring chances on both sides. With about eleven minutes to go in the frame the Panthers once again found success on the powerplay to take the 4-2 lead on the Knights. The Knights found a glimmer of hope with about three minutes left to go in regulation with a goal from Christian Gums with the assists from Riley Robertson and Ian Elkins. The Panthers then went on to seal the game with an empty net goal with four seconds left on the clock.
At the end of regulation the Panthers came out victorious over the Knights 5-3. The Knights outshot the Panthers 13-10 in the final frame.
Knights Goaltender Darin Fox had a strong game with 27 saves.
The Knights return to action Wednesday, Febuary 17th as they face off against Indiana Tech University at 8:00PM.
