The Calvin University ACHA D1 Knights defeated the Concordia University Cardinals 4-2 on Wednesday night in their opening game of the season.
In the first period the game started with high intensity going from end to end with solid scoring chances on both sides. The Knights struggled to move the puck of of their own zone in the first and struggled to find a way past the Cardinals defense. The Knights did recieve some good scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net. The Cardinals however, started very strong on the offensive end putting high pressure on the Knights. But it was the goaltenders who stole the show in the first period keeping both teams off the board.
At the end of the first period the game was deadlocked at 0-0 with the Knights getting out shot 13-5.
In the second period the Cardinals came out flying and within two minutes found the first goal of the contest. Luckily, the Knights quickly got the goal back about a minute and a half later with a goal from Jared Virtanen with the assist coming from Declan Curtis. The game continued with a very high pace and physical tone to it. With about six minutes to go in the period the Cardinals found the back of the net for the second time to take a 2-1 lead over the Knights. Once again, the Knights stormed back late in period and found the back of the net with two minutes left. The goal came from Maverick Baxtrom with the assists coming from Ian Elkins and Kyle Van Dusen.
At the end of the second period the game was tied 2-2 with the Knights getting out shot 12-8.
In the third period the Knights began to kick it into overdrive. The Knights quickly found the go ahead goal on the powerplay just two minutes into the period. The goal came from Virtanen for his second goal of the night with the assists from Elkins and Cal Erdmann. The Knights kept the pressure on the Cardinals for the rest of the period and got rewarded with an insurance goal with about nine minutes remaining. The goal came from Sam Dexter with the helper coming from Hayden Heys.
At the end of regulation the Knights came out victorious over the Cardinals 4-2 with the Knights out shooting the Cardinals 11-8 in the third.
Knights Goaltender, Darin Fox, finished the game with 31 saves to help secure the win for the team.
The Knights return to action on Friday, Febuary 12th in a matchup against Davenport University.
