WESTERVILLE, OH – Calvin opened its 2014 campaign with a 15-8 loss at Otterbein University Saturday afternoon.
The game marked the season opener for both teams.
Otterbein jumped out to a 4-1 lead and led 7-3 at halftime. Calvin scored in the opening seconds of the second half on a goal by junior Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) but Otterbein answered with four unanswered goals to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS), junior Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Reed has two goals apiece for Calvin in defeat. Also scoring goals were junior Mary Hoogstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS).
Cefaratti, Forbes and senior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were all credited with one assist on the afternoon.
Otterbein outshot Calvin 31-18. Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had nine saves in goal for the Knights.
Reed collected five ground balls for Calvin.
Otterbein took advantage of its free-position chances, converting 6 of 13 while the Knights went 0 for 5.
Calvin is back in action on next weekend when it travels to Defiance for a game on March 7 and then to Capital on March 8.
